Councillor and Ex Deputy Mayor eThekwini Fawzia Peer is currently a councillor as well as a former deputy mayor in the eThekweni municipality. Her political career has spanned 26 years in local government, and she considers herself a veteran ANC activist.
In her positions as the vice president of Minara Chamber of Commerce and the chairperson of Minara Business and Professional Women, she works closely to carry out Minara’s vision of promoting and strengthening business activities for its members.
Over the years in politics, Fawzia has experienced racism, sexism, ageism, cultural and religious prejudice. Where others may have been discouraged, she has remained steadfast because Fawzia is driven fundamentally to serve the community.
Fawzia is an industrial relations consultant by profession and this skill set, combined with living in the oppressive, racist regime of Apartheid fuelled her desire to contribute to changing the narrative through political engagement, activism and finally her leadership in local government.
