Mr Khethukuthula Ndawonde is currently pursuing a BCom Honours in Supply Chain Management at UKZN despite his path to higher education being fraught with financial hurdles.

He initially received a bursary from the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS), which supported him through his undergraduate studies until 2023. However, as he entered his Honours year in 2024, funding dried up, leaving him in a desperate situation. Unable to afford the registration fees, he turned to his local municipality, which provided a one-time grant to cover these costs as a temporary fix.

The turning point came when Zestcor, a company committed to supporting education, stepped in to fund his academic tuition fees. This generous bursary not only alleviated the immediate financial burden but also reignited Ndawonde’s hope and determination. ‘These bursaries have been a lifeline for me as they have enabled me to pursue my education and work towards my goals,’ he said.

Growing up in a low-income, disadvantaged family, he witnessed first-hand the struggles his single mother faced to provide for their family. This experience shaped his career ambitions and instilled in him a profound desire to succeed – not just for his own sake, but to uplift his family and community.

His dream is to use his expertise in supply chain management and agriculture to improve his community. He aims to bridge the gap between traditional farming methods and modern business strategies, enhancing the quality of life in his hometown eMsinga and similar rural areas. ‘By implementing cutting-edge supply chain solutions tailored for the agricultural environment, I believe that we can fully realise the potential of farming communities and promote sustainable development,’ he said.

Ndawonde’s current research focuses on how Industry 4.0 technologies, such as smart machines and learning computers, are revolutionising supply industries in Africa. He aims to understand how these advancements can make businesses more efficient and competitive, ultimately benefitting the broader economy. ‘My goal is to help African businesses adapt to new technology and thrive in a changing world,’ he said.

Ndawonde plans to complete his Honours degree and gain hands-on experience in the supply chain industry, with aspirations of becoming a demand planner or specialising in demand forecasting. He also intends to continue his studies, aiming for certifications that will enhance his expertise and open up further opportunities.

Advising other students, he said, ‘Your background and circumstances do not define your future. Stay focused on your goals and never underestimate the value of hard work and perseverance. Every obstacle you overcome is a step closer to your dreams. Reach out to friends, family, mentors or teachers when you need help. Embrace challenges as opportunities for growth and learning. And most importantly, take care of your physical and mental health.’
