EThekwini Metro, via Invest Durban & other Sister Units who co-sponsored the
Investec South African Open Championship, extends its heartfelt congratulations to
South African golfing Pro, Dylan Naidoo on his extraordinary achievement at the
recent SA Open Championship.
Dylan made S.A. history on 2 March 2025, securing the championship title with a
dramatic play-off victory at the iconic Durban Country Club. His success as a young
Black Professional is a moment of immense pride, inspiring all golfers and
showcasing Mzanzi’s rich golfing heritage in a similar fashion to the great “Papwa”
Sewgolam. This Legend of the past was also honored at the event with a banner wall
on the 1 st tee box, and a permanent marble plaque overlooking the 18 th green.
As the second-oldest National Open in the world after The British Open
Championship, this prestigious tournament attracted 156 professional golfers from
around the globe. However, unprecedented heavy rains forced the curtailment of the
final round, reducing the event to 54 holes, plus a “sudden death” playoff.
Dylan and England’s Laurie Canter were tied at 14 under par on the penultimate
round, leading to the dynamic play-off last Sunday. With remarkable composure,
Dylan birdied the first play-off hole to claim the Investec SA Open title in nail-biting
fashion. This victory marks his maiden DP World Tour title and places him amongst
only six other esteemed South African golfers who have previously won the SA
Open.
Naidoo’s triumph carries deep significance for KZN, and South Africa as a whole.
The Durban Country Club is where, in 1963, Sewsunker "Papwa" Sewgolum became
the first player of colour to win a professional golf tournament in South Africa,
clinching the Natal Open. Reflecting on this historic moment, Naidoo shared, "For
what this means in terms of Papwa Sewgolum and him having won the Natal Open
here, it’s incredible. I feel like he was with me here today."
His journey from local courses to international recognition is an inspiration for future
golfing talents. Beyond the immediate accolades, Naidoo’s victory secures him a DP
World Tour card and a coveted spot in The Open Championship at Royal Portrush
this July, marking his major tournament debut. "I mean, I’m on the DP World Tour!
That’s outrageous! I’m going to be playing around the world against some of the best
players in the world, and I’m playing in The Open. It’s a dream," said an elated
Dylan. His achievement is a testament to his dedication and the unwavering support
of his family, particularly his father, who witnessed his historic win, along with his
Caddie, coaching staff and Friends.
