Twenty-one years after opening, in September 2001, Gateway stands proud on Umhlanga Ridge, attracting thousands of visitors every day and providing a world-class shopping and entertainment experience.
“Gateway caused a sensation when it opened,” says General Manager, Feysel Potgieter. “There was nothing like it in the country. It was somewhere you could shop and stay the whole day, into the evening, having a good time.”
As part of an integrated plan, the mall ‘cracks open’ onto the iconic Palm Boulevard and is designed to let in an abundance of natural light from the East in the morning and West in the afternoon.
A month of festivities is planned to celebrate the milestone birthday, including competition with R250 000 prizes and a Museum of Memories where visitors can reminisce and reflect on the good times they’ve shared at the mall.

To celebrate, Gateway is giving away R250 000 in prizes between 1-24 September. All you need to do is spend at least R500 at any Gateway store, fill in the details on an entry form available at the entry boxes placed around the mall, and enter. Ten lucky winners will be drawn, each winning R21 000 in Gateway Shopping Vouchers and fabulous prizes from Gateway tenants.
Visit the Museum of Memories
Reflecting on 21 action-packed years, Gateway invites visitors to the Museum of Memories where they can discover fascinating facts about the mall and its history and reminisce about the memories they’ve made at Gateway.
“Twenty-one years is a milestone birthday we want to share with our partners – shoppers and tenants,” says Marketing Manager, Michelle Shelley. “To pay tribute to the many happy memories that have been made here, we’ve produced a visual interactive museum.”
A walk-through ‘2’ and ‘1’ shares Gateway’s origins and fascinating facts about this super-regional mall that functions on the scale of a small city. Recall the largest man-made stationary wave in the world which had a 10-foot left and right point break as well as the largest skate park in the country designed by world-renowned pro-Tony Hawk and SITE Design Group.
The museum’s finale, Gateway to the Galaxy, takes a multimedia trip to space, projecting stunning images from NASA’s James Webb telescope. The projections are a reminder of the KZN Science Centre, which operated at Gateway between 2002 and 2014. Run as a non-profit organisation, the Science Centre made science accessible to all in a fun and innovative way.
