Goscor Lift Trucks (GLT), a leading provider of forklifts and materials handling solutions, is thrilled to announce the relocation of its Johannesburg operations to a new, state-of-the-art facility. This move marks a significant milestone in GLT's ongoing commitment to enhancing service delivery, operational efficiency, and employee well-being.
After 40 years at the previous location, with expansions into additional buildings in Neutron Road in 2013 and again in 2021, GLT's new premises at Lords View Industrial Park, Midrand, signifies a new era for the company. The modern facility, spanning 13,784m², is designed with 11, 245m2 warehouse and workshop space, and offices to accommodate 200 employees for members of the Johannesburg branch, shared with GLT Head Office and Group shared services employees.
A rich history of accomplishments began in 1984 with the inception of Goscor and the introduction of Tennant and Crown to the South African market. In 1993, Daewoo Forklifts were introduced, marking a significant expansion in the product lineup. By 2001, Goscor Lift Trucks had become its own company. The rebranding of Daewoo to Doosan in 2005 and the introduction of Bendi Very Narrow Aisle forklifts in 2009 further solidified their market presence. The company continued to innovate with the introduction of Sunlight batteries in 2016 and DEC tow motors in 2018.
The appointment of Cecil Oates as Managing Director in 2020 marked a pivotal moment for the company, serving as the driving force behind the group's rebrand in 2023 and inspiring the move to new premises aimed at streamlining operations. The branch became standalone in 2022, having previously been part of the GLT Head Office in Johannesburg. The recently introduced Movexx electric tugs are the latest addition to the product diversification, all of which are poised to become long-standing OEMs. The current rebranding of Doosan to Bobcat forklifts in 2023/2024, the 40-year partnership with Crown, and the 15-year partnership with Bendi highlight the company's enduring commitment to excellence and innovation.
According to Ronald Ryan, General Manager for the Johannesburg Branch, "The decision to move was driven by the need for operational cohesion and the desire to combine all departments under one roof. The new premises are designed to be more energy-efficient, environmentally friendly, and conducive to better service delivery for our customers."
The new premises boast a modern, energy-efficient building equipped with solar energy storage, capable of operating during power disruptions, highlighting GLT’s commitment to sustainability. The company has invested in 600 x 550W solar panels, operating a 500kW inverter with a 20ft battery container housing 430kWh of storage capacity. This setup allows for significant savings on diesel costs previously incurred from generator use at the old site and generates an impressive 512MWh per year.
The new premises offers a collaborative environment that enhances team dynamics and morale. The facilities include a spacious, contemporary canteen, state-of-the-art workstations, all technology amenities built in, and abundant natural light, fostering a comfortable and productive workspace. Additionally, the office park location ensures a safer environment for both staff and customers. Located just 5km from the old premises, the new location provides convenience while maintaining proximity to existing operations.
“Employees are excited about the new facility, which surpasses the visuals they had seen previously. The move is expected to improve team dynamics, foster collaboration, and boost morale,” believes Ryan. “For customers, the new location offers a larger parts housing, better access for technicians and walk-in customers, and an overall improvement in service due to the harmonised operations between departments,” he adds. The significantly expanded parts holding facilitates improved distribution and access, further enhancing operational efficiency. Combining workshops into a communal workshop for all departments ensures operational cohesion and streamlined workflows across the organisation.
The move to the new facility has fast-tracked the company's integration of advanced technology across all areas of operations, significantly enhancing efficiency. This includes the implementation of high-tech systems aimed at reducing paper consumption and promoting sustainability. A key focus is on equipping technicians with technology for digital customer engagement, ensuring seamless and modern service interactions. “Even with these advancements,” Ryan affirms, “Goscor Lift Trucks remains committed to preserving the professional, personal touch that distinguishes the company in the industry.”
Staff development is a key priority for GLT at the new location. Central to this effort is a Developer Performance Centre to continue training its technicians on a national scale. “This advanced training facility will enable us to train up to 30 technicians per month on a rotational basis, ensuring continuous skills development and excellence in service delivery,” states Ryan.
GLT’s relocation to the state-of-the-art facility at Lords View Industrial Park marks a significant milestone in the company's history. This move not only enhances operational efficiency and sustainability but also underscores GLT's commitment to employee well-being, customer satisfaction, and continuous innovation. With advanced technology, improved facilities, and a focus on staff development, GLT is well-positioned for future growth and success.
