The Minara Chamber of Commerce proudly celebrated the success of its 2024 Business Awards, held on 25th October at the esteemed Orient Hall in Durban. This flagship event recognised and honoured the remarkable achievements of South Africa’s vibrant business community.

The evening featured a compelling fireside chat with Riaz Haffejee, senior vice president of Toyota South Africa’s Manufacturing Support Group. Drawing on his extensive expertise, Haffejee shared profound insights on leadership, innovation, and adaptability in an ever-changing business environment. His keynote address inspired attendees, encouraging a forward-thinking approach to the future of business in South Africa.

 

The Chamber expressed gratitude to headline partner Standard Bank for its steadfast support. Ameen Hassen, Head of Shariah Banking at Standard Bank South Africa, delivered an exceptional address, emphasising the bank’s commitment to fostering economic growth and empowering businesses—values closely aligned with the Chamber’s mission.

 

The awards celebrated an impressive range of finalists across multiple categories, showcasing the breadth of talent and innovation within South Africa’s business ecosystem. The Chamber congratulated all participants, acknowledging their dedication and significant contributions to their respective industries.

 

  • Business Entity Large Category: 27four Investment Managers was recognised for its exceptional growth, industry leadership, and innovation.

  • Business Entity Medium Category: Comessa Food Services, based in the Western Cape, earned the award for its sustainability initiatives, business excellence, and customer service.

  • Business Entity Start-up Category: Hydra Power Group, led by young entrepreneur Sameer Khan, was celebrated for its technological innovation and entrepreneurial spirit.

  • Businesswoman Category: Mariam Cassim, MD of Reunion Wholesalers in Durban, was honoured for her leadership and vision in the wholesale sector.

  • Professional Achiever Category: Abdullah Verachia, a global strategist and author, received recognition for his contributions to the professional sphere.

  • Businessperson of the Year: Suleman Shaik, CEO of Shaik Investments, was acknowledged for his business acumen, growth leadership, and community initiatives.

  • Young Entrepreneur Category: Yusuf Ahmed Moola, co-Director of Kondeni Fuels, stood out for his innovative and bold contributions to the industry.

  • Community Builder Category: Businessman and sports tourism activist Ashraf Allie was celebrated for his impactful community upliftment initiatives.

  • Minara Lifetime Achiever Award: Dr Naledi Grace Pandor, chairperson of the Nelson Mandela Foundation and former minister of international relations and Cooperation, received this prestigious honour. While unable to attend, Dr Pandor conveyed her heartfelt gratitude for the recognition.

 

The evening also paid tribute to two late business and community stalwarts, Ahmed Shoab Moosa of Willowton Group and Yusuf Gany Mahomed, with a moving commemoration by Minara Chamber President Solly Suleman.

 

The Minara Chamber of Commerce extended its appreciation to all sponsors, including Standard Bank South Africa, Capital Group, Bryte Takaful, 27four, Emergivac, AMKA Group, and Cell C, as well as media partners for their contributions to the event’s success. Their support underscored the collective strength of the Minara Chamber community in celebrating excellence and leadership.
