UKZN Pharmacy Student Leads with Hope and Resilience

UKZN Pharmacy student Ms Iviwe Gomomo

Meet Ms Iviwe Gomomo, a Pharmacy student at UKZN who is funded by the Hillensberg Trust: ‘The financial assistance has alleviated a significant burden, allowing me to focus on my studies.’ The money covers textbooks, meals, accommodation and tuition. It has not only provided financial relief but also boosted her confidence and motivation. ‘Knowing that I have the support of the Hillensberg Trust encourages me to strive for excellence in my academic endeavours.’ This support has empowered her to pursue her dreams with renewed vigour and dedication.

Gomomo’s aspirations are deeply rooted in her family background. After her mother's passing, she was raised by her grandmother, who also cared for five other orphaned cousins. ‘Growing up, I witnessed the immense sacrifices my grandmother made to ensure our well-being,’ she recalled. Her grandmother, a domestic worker, tirelessly provided for them despite her declining health. This profound dedication and love has fuelled her ambition to succeed and give back. ‘Witnessing her struggles while providing for us made me want to succeed and give back to her for all her sacrifices.’

‘I would always go to school without having food, and some days we would go to bed without food,’ she remembered. However, the love and prayers from her grandmother provided emotional support and a sense of hope during those difficult times.

Gomomo plans to do her PhD and branch into drug development. ‘I want to work with companies to assist students who are struggling with obtaining funding and also play a role in helping students make their dreams a reality,’ she said. She is committed to contributing meaningfully to the pharmacy profession and the broader healthcare field.

To other students facing similar challenges, Gomomo offered a powerful message of encouragement: ‘Achieving your goals is not about where you come from but it’s about where your vision can take you. Never forget that one day you will look back and thank yourself for never giving up.’

In her spare time, Gomomo finds solace and motivation in creating vision boards – a practice instilled by her grandmother. This simple yet profound activity helps her visualise a better future and stay focused on her goals. ‘It is a reminder that even in the face of adversity, hope and dreams can light the way forward,’ she said.
